Illustrations from Paraplyermes Oprør by Kjeld Abell

Kjeld Abell (1901-1961) was a Danish dramatist, he studied political science but afterwards began a career as a stage designer in Paris. He was considered unconventional and advanced in his use of stage sets. He wrote and illustrated the children’s book ‘Paraplyernes Oprør’ in 1937, Paraplyernes Oprør translates as ‘Umbrella the Rebellion’ or ‘The Revolt of the Umbrellas’. I was completed taken by the unusual, surreal, but beautiful illustrations and enjoyed trying to imagine what the story comprised of. Internet searches revealed to me that the tale is of a lonely waif who finds an umbrella and dreams that it comes to life to lead a rebellion against her pretentious wealthy relatives.
