York’s Pre-fab Discus Bungalows

These pre-fab homes in York may soon be up for demolition to make way for modern housing. Built in 1975/76 the 100 buildings are known as ‘Discus Bungalows’. The wide structures are hard to photograph but I wanted to capture the unusual buildings before they are gone. I think they are lovely and particularly like the individual colours and open communal gardens.

Happy Birthday East Kilbride

My Grandparent’s moved their family to East Kilbride when my Grandfather got a job in the new town. They stayed there after retirement and I have happy memories of visiting them throughout the 1980s. Since becoming interested in architecture and design of the 50s and 60s the town has again caught my attention and more than ever I think it’s a very special place.

Thank you Anne at I like for letting us know that this month is East Kilbride’s 60th birthday.

Ruins Safaris: An urban exploration photo set from Ruin Tourist on Flickr. I particularly like the empty kodak building and photographs found there.

Arcade Fire: Interactive music video for Neon Bible (via notcot.org). Arcade Fire can do no wrong.

Yokoespen: Yokoespen’s photo set - if it was a book I would buy it.

Cut out science illustrations: Not immune to colors by Airform Archives. A series of photos of the top scientists circa 1968 studying the immune system with fantastic cut out paper backgrounds.

Play-doh: Another great Sony Bravia advert. It took three weeks to make this stop-motion animation and 2.4 tonnes of plasticine.

Basil Spence: Slideshow of photographs from the Basil Spence Archive on wallpaper.com (via Sit down man, you’re a bloody tragedy). I knew nothing of Basil Spence until I found some of my Dad’s old architecture photos. There is a flickr group dedicated to the architect too.
